Mastitis and Blocked Ducts

Author: Celina

What is it?

Mastitis is a common condition during breastfeeding. It can develop quickly and may affect how you’re feeling both physically and emotionally. Knowing the signs early can help you get on top of it before it becomes more serious.

Common symptoms include:

  • Breast pain or tenderness

  • Redness or warmth over part of the breast

  • Swelling or a firm, lumpy area

  • Feeling tired, achy, or flu-like

  • Sometimes a fever

Mastitis often happens when milk isn’t draining well from the breast, leading to inflammation. Acting early is very important. The sooner you start treatment, the faster you’re likely to recover and the lower the risk of complications.

How can physiotherapy help?

Physiotherapy can be a very effective part of treatment.

We may use:

  • Therapeutic ultrasound to help reduce inflammation and support healing (can not be used if experiencing fever or flu like symptoms unless you have been on antibiotics for 48 hours)

  • Gentle massage techniques to improve milk flow and relieve blocked areas

  • Practical advice and education on feeding positions, drainage, and symptom relief strategies

We can also guide you on ways to manage discomfort at home and support ongoing breastfeeding where possible.

When should I see a GP?

If you develop a fever, feel significantly unwell, or notice your symptoms are worsening rather than improving, it’s important to book in with your GP promptly. You may need medical treatment such as antibiotics.

If you’re unsure whether it’s mastitis or simply a blocked duct, it’s always okay to reach out. Early support makes a big difference and can help you recover more quickly and comfortably.
